Brazil’s Northeast Coast: From Urban Shores to Secluded Getaways

As the peak summer season approaches, Brazil’s Northeast coast cements its status as one of the country’s top tourist destinations. The region’s nine states offer itineraries catering to every type of traveler, from bustling urban beaches with full amenities to more secluded spots accessible by short or long journeys.

Beaches Within the Capital Cities

For visitors seeking convenience, beaches located within city limits are an excellent option. In Fortaleza, Ceará, Praia do Futuro features large, well-equipped beachside restaurants and a nightly craft fair.

In Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Ponta Negra Beach is one of the most famous spots, landmarked by the iconic Morro do Careca dune. The local boardwalk is lined with hotels and restaurants. Meanwhile, in Aracaju, Sergipe, Atalaia Beach stands out for its impressive infrastructure, which includes an oceanarium and the Passarela do Caranguejo (Crab Walkway), a renowned culinary hub.

Getaways Up to 100 km from the Capitals

A short drive from the state capitals, other destinations combine easy access with unique landscapes. Just 60 km from Recife, Porto de Galinhas, in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, is famous for its natural pools formed by coral reefs.

In Ceará, 90 km from Fortaleza, Morro Branco Beach in the town of Beberibe attracts visitors with its Labyrinth of Morro Branco, a stunning cliff formation featuring sands of various colors. In the state of Alagoas, Gunga Beach is just 40 km from the capital Maceió and is notable for the breathtaking meeting point of the sea and the Roteiro Lagoon.

Also in Alagoas, São Miguel dos Milagres is located 100 km from the capital and is part of the ‘Rota Ecológica dos Milagres’ (Miracles Ecological Route). The area is known for its calm, gentle waters and vast coconut groves, and is home to the charming ‘Capela dos Milagres’ (Chapel of Miracles).

For a More Immersive Experience

For those looking for longer itineraries, some beaches require a bit more travel. Canoa Quebrada beach, in the municipality of Aracati, Ceará, is 160 km from Fortaleza and offers thrilling buggy rides across its dunes and cliffs.

In the state of Maranhão, 300 km from the capital São Luís, Praia do Amor (Love Beach) in Tutóia serves as a gateway to the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses (Little Lençóis). This destination is part of the famous ‘Rota das Emoções’ (Route of Emotions), an iconic tourist trail connecting scenic spots across the states of Maranhão, Piauí, and Ceará.
