The Ministry of Tourism released a survey this week highlighting 11 historic Brazilian cities to guide the creation of cultural itineraries across the country. The list is part of the Brazilian Tourism Map, a federal tool used to direct public infrastructure policies. The document maps out municipalities that preserve stunning architectural complexes built between the colonial era and the imperial period.

World Heritage Milestones and Official Records

The government’s itinerary includes destinations that hold the prestigious title of World Heritage Site, granted by the United Nations system. The timeline of recognitions documented in the report encompasses urban centers consolidated throughout the twentieth century. Official records point to three pivotal dates of international designation:

  • Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais, officially designated in 1980.
  • Olinda, in the state of Pernambuco, recognized in 1982.
  • Brasília, in the Federal District, added to the list in 1987.

In the North of the country, the report highlights Belém for its Ver-o-Peso Market, a vibrant cultural hub with 398 years of continuous activity under the protection of the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage. In Manaus, visits center around the majestic Amazonas Theatre, an iconic complex inaugurated in 1896 during the golden age of the rubber boom. In the Northeast region, the Bahian capital of Salvador draws travelers to the colorful streets of the Pelourinho and the National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture.

Rio de Janeiro, which served as Brazil’s administrative capital for 200 years, maintains a steady flow of visitors at the historic Largo da Carioca. To streamline the logistics of accessing all these fascinating regions, the federal administration manages the Discover Brazil Flying (Conheça o Brasil Voando) program. This initiative seeks to expand domestic airline connectivity, making it easier than ever for passengers to seamlessly travel to these incredible architectural hubs.
